Never in a million years did we think we would be featuring a teddy bear at the 2018 NYC Toy Fair. Yes, they are classic and cute, but if you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all, right? That is until we came across Bears for Humanity.
Shortly after giving birth to twins, co-founder Renju Prathap, was searching for organic teddy bears for her new little ones. She searched high and low, and all she could find was synthetic fur teddy bears made with toxic dyes and colors. The majority of the teddy bears on the market were made of highly-flammable and possibly carcinogenic polyester.
She was surprised to learn that the market for organic faux-fur teddy bears was nonexistent.
In 2013, Renju and her husband, Vijay, founded Bears for Humanity.
The hand-sewn teddy bears, made with 100% organic cotton and hemp, are certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), the leading international body that sets the standards for processing organic fibers. The cotton for the bears is purchased directly from organic co-op farmers to ensure Fair Trade practices and costs.
Parents can feel good knowing that their children are playing with teddy bears that are safe and non-toxic.
Making organic teddy bears was just one part of Renju’s goal. She wanted to find a way to give to others in need. Taking inspiration from Blake Mycoskie, the Founder of TOMS, Renju decided to implement the “Buy One, Give One” program. Each time a teddy bear is sold, another is donated to a child in need. Bears For Humanity has partnered with a handful of reputable charitable organizations, such as Toys for Tots or the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford, who help to ensure that the teddy bears make it into the little hands of those in need.
In fact, in December 2017, Bears For Humanity donated 5,700 bears to Toys for Tots, alone.
If you aren’t convinced by now that Bears For Humanity is a fantastic organization, here is one more reason to love this company: Bears for Humanity likes to keep jobs close to home. Located in Northern California, Bears for Humanity has partnered with to employ at-risk mothers, fathers, and caregivers. A welfare-to-work program, CalWORKS helps individuals get back on their feet.
While the teddy bears from Bears For Humanity are adorable, the company also makes other organic animals such as the Stuffed Giraffe and the Stuffed Shark. The plush teddy bears come in several sizes and colors to suit your tastes.
