’American Pastoral’ Trailer Shows Stark View From Ewan McGregor’s Directorial Debut
Ewan McGregor makes his directorial debut with American Pastoral, based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel from Philip Roth. Set to Jasmine Thompson’s haunting cover of “Mad World,” the first trailer does a remarkable job of raising intrigue for the film without giving too much away, a rarity these days. For his part, McGregor, who also stars, seems to have developed a keen eye over the years, displaying a clear palette and attention to framing you might not expect from a first time director. Jennifer Connelly and Dakota Fanning co-star in American Pastoral, which opens October 28 in limited release before rolling out to additional theaters in the following weeks.
‘Assassin’s Creed’ Still Looks Baffling in Second Trailer
The second trailer for Assassin’s Creed shows us, more or less, more of the same from the upcoming adaptation of the popular video game franchise. As easy as it might be to dismiss the movie out of pocket, the inclusion of Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, and Jeremy Irons is just intriguing enough that it might work. That, and the fact that it’s directed by Justin Kurzel, who previously directed Fassbender and Cotillard in last year’s Macbeth with stunning results. Whether or not this team can bring the same level of intensity and beauty to a video game movie is still up in the air, but if anyone can pull it off, it’s this team.

Michael Moore Unveils Surprise Film ‘Michael Moore in Trumpland’
Just in time for the election, filmmaker Michael Moore unleashed his own October surprise. His latest film, Michael Moore in Trumpland was made in near secrecy before being unleashed last night in New York City. Reportedly intermixing a standup/spoken word performance with Moore’s traditional documentarian style, Trumpland makes the case for Hilary Clinton in this divisive election year. The film will be available to purchase and rental this week on iTunes, with Moore’s stated hope that millions of people, especially anyone who is (somehow) still undecided, can watch it and make up their own minds.
Peter Skarsgard Joins ‘Escobar’
Peter Skarsgard has signed on to portray a DEA agent in the upcoming Escobar, based on the life of notorious drug kingpin, Pablo Escobar. Javier Bardem had been previously announced as the kingpin in writer/director Fernando Leon De Aranoa’s upcoming film. Escobar, long a figure in pop culture since his demise, has gotten a lot of play in recent years thanks to Netflix’s Narcos. This film, however, is said to focus on Escobar’s unlikely relationship with Virginia Vallejo, a popular journalist and talk show host in Columbia at the time. Vallejo will be portrayed by Penelope Cruz.
