Teddy bears were flown in to Kalgoorlie-Boulder this month to spread a little Christmas cheer among at-risk children.
The first batch of 50 were handed out on December 15 at the annual Goldfields Children in Care Christmas party.
Another 20 were chaperoned on a flight from Perth on Monday last week and given to children who missed the party.
The bear delivery was the result of an up-skilling project where Arc Infrastructure teamed up with Loop Australia to find a use for one tonne of obsolete uniforms.
The uniforms were sent to community-based seamstresses who, with a little creative thinking and a lot of stitching, spent an average of 45 minutes making each of the 390 bears.
Goldfields Children in Care team leader Marie Lucey said the gifts were very welcome.
“The bears are gorgeous and the kids absolutely loved them,” she said.
“We currently have approximately 130 children in care in the district and we rely heavily on donations … to be able to give to these children, who unfortunately are some of the most vulnerable in the Goldfields.”
