The 10 Best Video Games to Give This Holiday Season

Whether the weather outside is frightful or not, it’s the most wonderful time of the year for video game fans. All of the big 2017 releases are out now. And two of the three big console makers—Sony and Microsoft—are offering temporary price drops on hardware and bundles. (Nintendo’s Switch, which remains the hottest device in the world and is in short supply, retains its $300 price tag.)

Microsoft has a brand new console, the Xbox One X ($500), which supports gaming, movies and entertainment in 4K both through an Ultra HD disc drive and streaming. It’s currently the most advanced console on the market (at least until Sony PlayStation 5 is announced). There are also discounted Microsoft consoles, including the Xbox One S, and bundles with additional games starting at $199. Microsoft is still selling the older Xbox One, but given the 4K support and additional improvements in the S, it’s not worth investing in that device at this point in the game.

Sony’s PlayStation 4 Pro, which supports 4K gaming and entertainment through streaming, is now $350 by itself or $400 with a bonus game bundle (choose from Destiny 2 or Star Wars Battlefront II). The original PS4, which does not support 4K or have the additional processing power of the Pro, is available for $250. Sony has also reduced the price of its PlayStation VR system, which now starts at $200 for a bundle that includes the virtual reality headset, the PlayStation camera and Gran Turismo Sport (the PS4 console is sold separately).

And whether you’re buying one of these consoles or already have one, new games are the key to making those long evenings merry and bright. Here’s a list of 10 great games to play now.
